I am the child of college professors, one specializing in English/Communications and the other in Social Work. My mother and father were, and still are, avid readers and big proponents of the written word as a means of communicating ideas and expressing oneself. You might conclude that I was predestined to be a writer of some ilk, but for a while, writing always felt like a struggle. Maybe it was the pressure of living up to the expectations I perceived them to have. Or maybe I just wasn’t meant to write. Or maybe I just sucked at writing. Regardless the reason, I resisted it for a long time.
However, despite all my resistance to writing, I have always found joy in reading. The written word allows one to place yourself in the midst of a story, creating your own perspective of the scenery and imagery and characters. As I grew older, the desire to create something of my own that elicited these same feelings in others grew stronger, reaching the point where I found myself wanting to write the next “great American novel.” For better or worse, that’s what I’ve been doing for the last 6 years. And to that end, I have also taken a stab at writing essays, short stories, and blogs, many of which have not been shared publicly. But I continue to push towards the completion of that novel in hopes that it will bring excitement to even the smallest segment of readers.
Check out my blog for my commentaries and other writing and stay tuned for announcements regarding the (eventual) completion of my novel.
